Most Nigerians bore a certain way of thinking that makes it difficult for them to make the decision to save and prepare for the future. It is a terrible psychology that has kept many in perpetual poverty and reduced them to almost nothing.

You Can Take It with You When You Die

You can almost hear this every day as Nigerians go on with their daily activities. These people will start spending money the same day they earned it, drinking and impressing friends. They tell you if you save money and die tomorrow, someone else will be the one to enjoy it. And when they finish the money and still alive, they go on blaming the government and everyone else for not giving them an opportunity.

Big Boy/Big Girl Mentality

Every young and adult Nigerian want people to see themselves as successful and "happening", no matter what their status actually is. So, with the little money they have, they go on buying clothes, shoes and all kinds of fashion accessories that make them feel good about themselves. Some of them will even take all the money they have to buy a car, no matter how cheap it is, just to prove that they are making it. To these people, the idea of saving is alien and unthinkable. These are the kind of individuals you confidently say… have eaten their future.

Peer Pressure

Just like the big boys and girls, everyone wants to be the one "happenings". You want to be like your friends, using big phones and driving big cars, without knowing exactly what they are doing for a living. Peer pressure also affects adults who want to ensure they meet up with everyone else in their age group.

No matter what the situation is, you cannot be deceived into spending all you have for the pleasures of today. You need to learn how to save money and here is some tips to help you.

Have a Plan

Have a plan for what you want to do with your life regarding career, education, and family. Decide how much of your monthly earnings you want to keep aside for your plan to succeed.

Open a bank account with a bank close to you. Don’t ask for a debit/credit card you can use at the ATM instead, get a checkbook. Having a debit card makes it easier for you to withdraw money which can go against your plans to save.

Avoid the company of people who only think more about the present time than the future. Remember what you do today is what will become of you tomorrow.

Practice and learn to save money. It may not be easy, but with commitment and dedication, you will excel. Have a plan you will follow and adhere to and avoid people who influence you negatively. You have a wonderful life and deserve to be happy so do the right thing.
